People are bombarded every day with selfish thoughts, and more and more people are living that way. But should people only be thinking of themselves? Many people are discovering that helping others is as beneficial to themselves as it is to those they are helping.
There are many benefits to helping others. First of all, people feel better both physically and mentally after they help other people. Probably the best reason for this is that it causes people to forget about their own problems while they are caring for someone else. The only possible downside is people sometimes worry that they may not have helped the other person as much as they could have.
Helping others, especially when helping out the less fortunate, gives both parties a better understanding of each other's community. When communities understand each other better, they are healthier and become safer as well. One good way to help the less fortunate and to gain a better understanding between people is when organizations set up mentoring programs. Many mentors feel they gained as much or more from the experience than the person being mentored.
Helping others can be a good business practice as well. Helping others doesn’t have to mean doing charity work, although doing charitable work doesn’t hurt one’s resume either. The economy is becoming more and more service orientated. Helping others is what service companies do. The more people feel helped, the more business you will get from them, and that helps your bottom line.
